Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
– Exodus 19:5-6 (NIV)
When I was a child, I found the commandments scary. I remember memorizing the commandments, when I was in school. Memorization wasn’t one of my best attributes. I didn’t always understand what I was memorizing, but I knew it was important to my learning about God. Some commandments weren’t relevant to me, since I was a child. I didn’t even know what the words meant and thank goodness they weren’t explained to me then. Were there commandments broken, when I was a child. Yes, at times there were commandments broken. However, just like my parent’s love, I was taught that I could never lose God’s forgiveness and love. Just like the need to please my parents, I needed to please my God. I realized his commandments were there for me to grow and become the person he created me to be.
How about you? Do you believe the laws of God as repressive or freeing? As an adult do you run around around stealing or lying etc.? Probably not, because you understand the commandments are a guideline for your life. During a busy day, do you easily angered? I can. I don’t mean to, but it happens. I usually apologize to the person and God. God will forgive me, but the human person is different. They can hold grievances in their heart. Sometimes it takes time, lots of time. Exodus tells us that God wants us as a people for himself. I love that thought and try to work toward it. Some days I fail. But, just like any relationship, rules help. Those rules came to us from a loving father. He’s ready to help each of us become the creation he believes we can. He said “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.” When we obey his rules, he will soften our hearts and we become His people and His treasured possessions.
Lord, help us to follow your commandments. We want to and we need to. Our desire is to be Your people, holy nation, and treasured possessions. Amen
